Following a three (3) month-long protracted strike, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) is pleased to announce that the CCMA-facilitated section 150 Conciliation process in terms of the Labour Relations Act (LRA) was successfully concluded. On Saturday, 11 June 2022, Sibanye-Stillwater’s Gold operations, Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) agreed on a multi – year wage agreement, paving the way for operations to resume and also affirming the realization of labour peace amongst the parties. The agreement also outlined both parties commitment to eradicating certain core issues before their expiry.
The CCMA’s Director, Advocate Cameron Morajane, welcomed the signing of the multi-year wage agreement and thanked all parties for demonstrating confidence in the CCMA’s facilitation and for remaining committed to the process. Gratitude was further extended to CCMA Commissioners who remained unequivocally vested in the success of the facilitation process.
“As the CCMA, we are proud to have played a significant role in brokering for a settlement that not only ends the protracted strike, but will see operations resume at Sibanye-Stillwater and employees enjoying better wages and improved conditions. This feat is significant towards stabilising the labour market”, Morajane concluded.
The CCMA remains committed to workplace democratisation by promoting labour market peace and stability and advancing economic development. The signing of the multi-year wage agreement contributes immensely to these objectives as underpinned by the LRA.
