SUBJECT: CCMA DENOUNCES SHOOTING INCIDENT OUTSIDE CCMA RUSTENBURG OFFICE & EXTENDS AN APOLOGY TO AMCU

The CCMA denounces the recent shooting incident that transpired outside its Rustenburg Office on Thursday, 19 August 2021, which claimed the life of National Union of Metalworkers South Africa’s (Numsa’s) official, Malibongwe Mdazo. In this regard, the CCMA passes its condolences to Mdazo’s family, colleagues and friends.

The CCMA wishes to extend an apology to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), following the erroneous statement made in a voice note to the SABC News, in which it was stated incorrectly stated that Amcu was party to the CCMA verification process that was taking place on the day. The rest of the voice note to the SABC News remains factually correct in terms of the number of parties injured and the fatality suffered on the day.

The CCMA’s Rustenburg Office has since re-opened and matters are proceeding as scheduled. “I wish to assure CCMA Users and Stakeholders that all CCMA premises are weapon-free zones with the presence of security officials to uphold the safety of both CCMA Users and employees”, said Mr. Morajane.
